The Mayfield Mavericks captured the overall team title at Thursday’s Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) cross country championship at Heart Lake Conservation Area.
The Mavericks finished with 601 points (based on the places of the top four runners in each age division). St. Marcellinus Spirit was second with 731 while the Heart Lake Hurricanes were third with 1,015.
Mayfield won both the overall girls and boys crowns. The Maverick boys finished with 330 points to edge out St. Marcellinus, which had 344. Heart Lake was third with 540. The margin was wider in the girls with Mayfield collecting 271 points, St. Marcellinus second with 387 and Heart Lake third with 475.
Besides regional honours, runners were also looking for berths at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) championship next Saturday at Boyd Conservation Area in Vaughan.
The top two teams in each of the six divisions qualify for OFSAA with any top three individual, not on one of those teams also qualifying.
In the senior girls division, Emily Dulhanty from the Loyola Warriors led the way with a time of 19:46. Pauline Skowron from Robert R. Hall was second in 19:57 while Claire Stewart of Cawthra Park was third in 20:12.
Cardinal Leger Lancers and Mayfield had the top two teams. Leger finished with 50 points with the top four finishers Laura Sinclair in fifth, Stephanie Silva 10th, Samantha MacDonald 15th and Leah Marie Ramalho 20th.
Mayfield collected 65 points led by Sacha Taylor in sixth, Ashley Huet 14th, Katie Prufer 21th and Erinn Brown 24th.
The top senior boys finisher was Jeff Stone from Turner Fenton Trojans who completed the course in 22:46. Luca Geiser from John Cabot was second in 23:09 while Philippe Parrot-Migas from St. Aloysius Gonzaga also earned a trip to OFSAA by finishing third in 23:27.
Cardinal Leger and Mayfield had the top two teams with Leger winding up with 32 points. Dalton Rismay finished fifth, Nick Pimental seventh; Daniel Bright ninth and Dantae Chance 11th.
Mayfield finished with a total of 66 led by Stuart Loney in 10th, Jonathan Settembri 14th; Tyler Symons 19th and Darren Mancini 23rd.
Alix Tier from Cawthra captured the junior girls’ title in 15:55 with Stephanie Nevison of Clarkson second in 16:18 and Amanda Sheppard from Gonzaga third in 16:30.
Lorne Park Spartans won the team crown with Caela Fenton seventh, Elaine Didiano eighth, Samantha Cameron 14th and Alison Rogers 29th.
Turner Fenton was second with Kristy Cook fourth, Katie Johnston 10th, Sara Sahota 28th and Asma Farooq 34th.
Iona’s Juan Bernal won the junior boys race in 20:51, edging out Robert McCann from Lorne Park who clocked 20:52. Matt Bispo of Brampton Centennial was third in 21:03.
John Cabot captured the team crown with 45 points. Orest Kowalik finished fourth, Stanley Lubinic sixth, Chris Gdula 14th and Chris Szymus 21th.
St. Marcellinus took second with a total of 103. Daniel Hutchings finished 11th, Jerome Ramos 20th, Tyler Chuang 32nd and Alex Albanese 40th.
Nicole Loncar from Leger won the midget girls title in 12:03. Jordanna Colwill of Cawthra Park was second in 12:36 while Cherith Somerville of Streetsville was third in 12:52.
Cawthra won the team crown with 65 points, led by Colwill with Samantha Pitton seventh; Kim Beech 25th and Zoe Mack in 31th.
Leger finished second with 111. Loncar led the way with others on the team, Lara Dobbins in 22nd, Emily Cava in 40th and Kayla Younge in 48th.
Joey Heartwell from Clarkson won the midget boys division in a time of 16:52. Myles Zagar from Mayfield was second in 17:25 while Jeramie Lai from St. Marcellinus took third in 18:01.
St. Marcellinus took the team crown with 50 points. Team members were: Lai, Andrew Andreis in 11th, Jarren Kerr in 16th and Sayer Tomaini in 20th.
Mayfield was second with 59 points, led by Zagar. Grayson Williams was seventh, Cody Tremblay 22nd and Matthew Van Heuklom 28th.
