Stratford Cullitons rookie Brad McClure has been named Midwestern Conference player-of-the-month for January.
McClure, 16, had a great month for the Tribe, scoring 11 goals and adding two assists in nine games. He currently sits in third place in Cullitons’ scoring with a team-leading 26 goals, 18 assists and 44 points in 47 games.
• Parents of the Cullitons didn’t need to ask what their boys were doing last week.
They practiced Monday, played in Kitchener Tuesday, practiced Wednesday, played in Brantford Thursday, played Elmira at home Friday, practiced Saturday morning, and played in Waterloo Sunday afternoon.
“There wasn’t a day we weren’t on the ice (last) week,” captain Bucky Nelson noted.
• The Tribe is 6-6-1 since the holiday break. Coach Phil Westman was asked if he could point to any one reason for his team’s improved play.
“We need all four lines going and playing their roles,” he replied. “And our goaltending has been more consistent than it was. We’re pretty confident with them right now.
“Our whole team has just been playing good steady hockey.”
• Veteran centre Cohen Adair had the game winners in both Stratford victories last week. He leads the team in that category with six.
Adair, 18, finished the week with 21 goals and 56 points, just one behind team scoring leader Kyle Wilhelm (22-35-57).
• Waterloo Siskins (38-6-1) have just one regulation-time loss and one overtime loss in their last 26 games – dating back to Nov. 20.
Siskins trail first-place Brantford Golden Eagles (37-5-4) by one point, but have a game in hand. The teams meet again Saturday, Feb. 27 in Brantford.
