Huskies senior boys win WOSSAA silver

The Northwestern Huskies senior boys basketball team capped a very successful season at the WOSSAA AAA basketball championships held at East Elgin SS in Aylmer on Monday by winning the WOSSAA silver medal.

In the Game 1 semi-final Northwestern defeated the host East Elgin Eagles 51-50.  The Huskies led 14-12 at the quarter, 26-24 at the half, and 41-32 after three quarters. During the fourth quarter East Elgin mounted a furious comeback with three quick three pointers which got the home crowd going and the Eagles back in the game.  

With East Elgin in foul trouble the Huskies had the chance to extend their lead in the fourth quarter, however they only made eight of 17 from the free throw line during the frame.
Nick Graver led all scorers with 19 points, including four three- pointers. Peter Hoskin and Sean Leggett added nine each.

In the gold medal game a very skilled and talented Oakridge Oaks defeated Northwestern 63-41. The win was the sixth straight WOSSAA gold medal in as many years for the Oaks.

This will also mark the sixth straight trip to OFSAA for Oakridge.

“Oakridge’s defence was the toughest we’ve faced all season,” said coach Randy Johnson.

“They made us work incredibly hard for every point we scored.”  

Oakridge led 14-10 at the quarter, 25-16 at the half, and 45-29 after three quarters.  

The Huskies couldn’t find an answer to Oakridge’s 6’5" standout Peter Scholtes (#32), who scored 30 points including five three pointers.  

“Scholtes is a very versatile player who positions himself very well on the floor to get open and to make things happen,” Johnson said.

Nick Graver led all scorers with 11 points.  Peter Hoskin added eight.

East Elgin defeated Ingersoll for the senior bronze medal.

Huskies win  H-P conference
The Stratford Northwestern Huskies won the Huron-Perth Conference Senior Boys basketball championship with a 45-38 win over St. Mikes at St. Mikes.  

St. Mikes led the contest 21-18 at the half, and the Huskies led 30-27 after three quarters.

Leading scorers for Northwestern include were Mike Macmillan with 16, Nick Graver with 10, Tony Enns with seven,  and Sean Leggett with six.

Leading scorers for St. Mikes were Jeremy Dechert with 10, Sam Love with seven, and Ben Valiquette with five.
