Two Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) ‘B’ championship tournaments are being held in the city this Labour Day weekend.
Nick Chiocchio’s Major Peewee Indians – sponsored by Dunny’s Source for Sports – open Friday against Wyoming at Dufferin Park, starting at 3 p.m.
The six other teams in the Peewee division are Listowel, Port Hope, Aurora, Bolton, St. Thomas and Leamington.
All Peewee games will be played at either Dufferin or Optimist park.
At the recent OBA qualifier in Wallaceburg, Maverick Petrie and Owen McLeod powered the Dunny’s Source for Sports Peewees to a berth in the OBA championships.
The Indians defeated Amherstburg 9-3 and then pounced on Port Colborne en route to a lopsided 17-1 victory to secure a spot in the Labour Day provincials.
The Major Peewees head into the OBA championships after winning the silver medals at their I-C League playoff tournament this past weekend in Waterloo.
Coach Chiocchio says his Indians are “eight pitchers deep” and they’re a team that averages 12 to 15 stolen bases a game. He adds that his Peewees are also a “good-hitting” club.
“The biggest asset on our team is the chemistry on the bench,” Chiocchio notes. “We have a group of fellows who want to be at the ball park.”
Four teams in Bantam division
Stratford Indians are one of four teams in the OBA Bantam ‘B’ championship this weekend, with all games slated for National Stadium and one at SERC.
The local Bantams are coached by Jeff Morris.
Indians open the tourney Friday at National Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Welland will provide the opposition.
Milton and Woodstock are the other two teams in the double-knockout format. Stratford will play its second game Saturday at 9 a.m. Morris says the Bantam Indians have an excellent chance at winning the provincial title.
“If we play like we can, we have a very good chance of winning it,” the coach said. “This group of boys has been in the final four of the last five years. They’ve been a pretty solid team.”
