Stratford Area Deaths

Jean Frances Baker
Jean Baker, 84, of Stratford died Monday, Aug. 25 at Stratford General Hospital. She was born in Stratford to parents Ted Lightfoot and Ada May Bartrop. In 2000 she was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Baker whom she married in 1948. She was a lifelong member of St. James Anglican Church. She enjoyed golfing at the “Muni”, and her years spent playing on the Ladies Cribbage League. She is survived by her children Charlotte (Murray) Neumeister McTavish of Shakespeare and Janice K Baker of Stratford. Visitation was at the W.G. Young Funeral Home. A celebration of her life was held at St. James Anglican Church on Thursday. Interment in Avondale Cemetery.

Ida Carr
Ida Winnifred Carr, 94, died Aug. 16 at the Hillside Manor, RR 5, Stratford. Born in New Hamburg, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Moulton and the former Agnus Knott. She was a member of the Stratford General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, the Festival City Kiwins Club and Central United Church. In 1997 she was predeceased by her husband Wilfred G. Carr. She is survived by her son Wilfred T. Carr and his wife Jutta of Kitchener. Ida was the last surviving member of her family. A private graveside service was held at Avondale Cemetery.

Joan Dench
Joan Dench, 85, of Stratford, died Aug. 24 at PeopleCare in Tavistock surrounded by her family. Born in Charlottenburgh, Ont., she was a daughter of the late Ephrem Aubin and the former Roseanna Bedard. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. In 1976 she was predeceased by her husband Herbert John Dench whom she married in Stratford in 1946. She is survived by her children Sharon Twamley and her husband Lorne, Stratford; Rod Dench and his friend Donna, Ingersoll; Deborah Jeffery and her husband Paul, Bayfield; Shirley McCorquodale, Stratford; and Linda Dench and her friend Matt, Stratford. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by her son Gary Dench. Visitation was at the W.G. Young Funeral Home. A funeral mass was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Interment in Avondale Cemetery.

Bernd (Ben) Muller
Bernd (Ben) Muller of Stratford died suddenly at Kingston General Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 24. His is survived by his wife Valerie. Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time and were to be announced by the W.G. Young Funeral Home.
 
Eleanor Murray
Eleanor Murray, 79, of Stratford, died suddenly on Aug. 19. Born in Stratford, she was a daughter of the late Francis Jordan and the former Mary McCarty. Along with her husband Jim, she farmed at Lot 30, Con. 10, of Ellice Township for 49 years. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Kinkora. She graduated as a registered nurse from St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, in 1950 and had nursed at Stratford General Hospital for many years. In 2000 she wsa predeceased by her husband James (Jim) Murray whom she married in 1951. She is survived by her children Patricia Riehl (Steve Riehl), Janet Weir (Andy Brown), Kenneth Murray (Debra), Peter Murray, Jamie Murray (Diane), Marlene Kelly (Jim Kelly) and Leanne Murray. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by her daughter Dianne Murray. Visitation was at the W.G. Young Funeral Home. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Patrick's Church. Interment in the church cemetery.

Hilda Nickerson
Hilda Bernice Nickerson, 57, of RR 5, Stratford, died Aug. 20 at Stratford General Hospital. Born in Kingston, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Fannie Voutour. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Nickerson. She is survived by her daughter Dawn Armstrong and her friend Jason Cousins. There was no funeral service. Burial in New Brunswick. Final arrangements by the W.G. Young Funeral Home.

Lynn Read
Lynn Laura Read, 60, of Stratford, died Aug. 19 with her family at her side on Tuesday, Aug. 19. She was born in Stratford, a daughter of the late George and Dorothy (Dunsmore) Tremaine. She had a love for music and drama, was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church junior and senior choirs for many years, as well as St. John’s Church Choir. She was a cast member of the Anglican Theatre Guild. She had served as St. Paul’s Vestry Clerk. She was a member of the original Stratford Summer Music Choir and the Concert Choir. She had been secretary of the Royal Canadian Naval Association, a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans, Unit 261, Stratford, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Stratford where she was poppy secretary and entertainment chair for several years. She is survived by her husband Russ Marlow, and by her children Jodi Quipp (Roy), and Jennifer McCarthy (Greg), all of Stratford, and Jeffrey Read, of Alberta. A funeral service was held at the W.G. Young Funeral Home.

Ethel Jane Sloat
Ethel Jane Sloat, 83, of Stratford, died Aug. 22 at Hillside Manor, RR 5 Stratford. She was born at Gads Hill to the late Samuel and Mary (Busch) Sloat. She was a member of the L’Arche Stratford Community which she called home for the past 30 years. For the past couple of years she lived at Hillside Manor. She was a member of Central United Church. She loved to spend time with her friends, going out for coffee and spending time with children. She was predeceased by brothers Sam, Roy, William, Harold, Joe, Kenneth, George, Gerald and her sisters Florence, Margaret and Isabel. She is survived by one sister, Mae Henry, sister-in-law Florence Sloat and manynieces and nephews. Her family received guests at Central United Church, Stratford where a funeral service was held. Final arrangement by the W.G. Young Funeral Home.

Henk Van Nes
Hendricus Van Nes, 71, died Aug. 23 at Spruce Lodge. He was born in Leusden, Utrecht, The Netherlands, a son of the late Jacobus and Matilda (Blom) Van Nes. He had farmed in Downie Township since 1954. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Stratford. He is survived by his wife Betty and children Jim (Corien), Paul Van Nes, Brenda Beenders (Mark), Michelle Hulman (Harry), Joe Van Nes. Visitation was at the W.G. Young Funeral Home. A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Stratford. Interment in Avondale Cemetery.

Last week the Gazette inadvertently published an obituary from the archives, presenting it as a current news item. The death of Dr. Kenneth Marshall occurred one year ago and not last week as we reported. The Gazette regrets this error and offers our sincerest apology to Dr. Marshall’s family.
