TORONTO - Michael Johnstone, of Stratford, captured the gold medal in the 100-metre final (T38 category) at the Canadian Paralympic National Track and Field Championships held at the University of Toronto here last Thursday afternoon.
Johnstone ran 14.88 seconds in the event, and improved upon his second-place finish from 2008. He represents and trains with the Laurel Creek Track and Field Club.
• Stratford Memorials Peewees went 2-2 in the OASA Elimination double-knockout tournament, hosted by Stratford this past weekend.
Memorials opened with a 10-8 loss to Port Perry, with Matt Taylor supplying a home run and two singles for Stratford.
Memorials then rebounded to mercy Enterprise (Eastern Ontario) 15-0 in four innings, with Ryan Strasser tossing a no-hitter. He missed a perfect game when he hit a batter in the final inning. Strasser helped his cause with a triple and two singles.
In Game 3, Stratford defeated Elmira 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sam Campbell stroked the winning single, driving in Dillon Trachsel. Trachsel spun a two-hitter in that exciting win, while fanning five.
In Game 4 Saturday evening, Memorials lost a close 2-0 decision to Stouffville. Ryan Strasser was tagged with the pitching loss, after throwing a five-hitter.
The top two teams earned a spot in the Eastern Canadian championships in Newfoundland later this summer.
• Stratford Erie Drive-In Squirt Flames defeated Waterloo Ghosts Black 13-6 last Wednesday night, June 24.
Leading the offence were Maddie Arms with a home run, Rachel McDougall with a double and a single, Courtney Forbeck with a double, and Grace Fountain with a single.
Strong pitching was contributed by Rachel McDougall and Alyssa Elligson, and Grace Fountain and Avery Casey were solid behind the plate.
• Stratford Memorials Midgets improved to 7-2 on the season with an 11-2 victory over Elmira in North Waterloo boys fastball action last Wednesday night.
Michael Lagace-Roote tossed a three-hitter, while fanning nine.
At the plate, Lagace-Roote helped his cause with a home run. Jon Hood added three singles, Tim Ruston a single and triple, and Scott Gibson a single and double.
• Stratford Hiller Royal LePage Under-10 Strikers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against Kitchener Spirit last Wednesday night.
After playing attractive soccer for the first half, the wheels fell off and Kitchener scored five
unanswered goals against a lethargic Striker team to earn a 5-2 victory.
Edgar Polanco and Joe Yundt scored for the Strikers, while Luke Fischer was a bright spot defensively.
• In Southwest Region Soccer League Women’s Premier Division action Sunday in Shakespeare, three goals from Tara Chadwick powered Stratford Boar’s Head to a 6-0 victory over Shakespeare Arms.
It was Chadwick’s fourth hat trick of the season. Also scoring for Stratford were Emily Bakker, Erin Mitchell and Lindsay Marsh.
Boars Head are now 7-0-0, and have allowed just three goals against to date.
Next home game is Friday night, the first-round Senior Cup match versus Waterloo Azzurri at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Stratford faces 2008 SWRSL league champions Waterloo Wildfire away at Bechtel Park.
